I recently presented to a Leadership Victoria conference on the topic of “Why Not for Profits Should Not be Afraid of Risk.” It was a lot of fun, but the most interesting thing to come out of the session was the visceral response I got to discussing passive-aggressive behaviours within organisations as a major barrier to appropriate opportunity risk-taking.
As well as prompting a significant proportion of questions to the follow-up panel session, I was also approached by several people directly after the presentation, all wanting to discuss this specific topic. I’d love to trigger a broader discussion around this issue. I see it as a major inhibitor to innovation, efficiency and success within many large organisations, whether NFPs, for profits, or government.
So, what does passive aggressive mean? What happens in passive aggressive organisations? Where does it come from? Can it be overcome?
